Have you ever dealt with a pesky breakout during the holidays? Has your skin ever freaked out on you after a holiday work party or family dinner? If it has, you're definitely not alone because I've been there too!
The holidays are filled with magic and cheer, but also stress and a lot of food, which can make your skin misbehave big time.
Moderation this time of year is key to keep your skin in check. Sugars and fats, though yummy, can wreak havoc on your skin and cause acne. Dairy is also a big culprit! You can still indulge in your favorite treats, just be mindful of the amount you consume.
If you're looking for something healthier, there are tons of alternatives to your favorite holiday favorites. I try to bake my cookies with a flour substitute like almond flour or coconut flour. I'm also always looking for recipes with reduced sugar. They are out there, you just have to look!
Eggnog is always flowing at the holiday parties I attend each year, and it's one of the toughest things to stay away from for me. I try to limit my alcohol consumption, because my skin hates me if I get a little more than tipsy. Drinking water in between your glasses of wine can help big time! I make sure I have a cup of water in between each glass. It slows me down and I don't feel dehydrated the next morning. My skin stays in check too, which makes it worth it! Some skin is more sensitive to different foods and alcohol than others. I'm one of the unlucky ones that alcohol and copious amounts of food affects my complexion big time, so it's best for me to moderate.
Another good rule to live by is to make sure to take your makeup off at the end of the night. I make sure, no matter how tired I am or how much I've had to drink, to do at least a simple skin care routine when I get home. Your skin needs constancy, and sleeping in your makeup will do you no favors.
Stress is a huge breakout causer, and the holidays are never short of it! Try to get some r and r when you're feeling overwhelmed. Draw a nice bath, throw on a sheet mask and relax! We all have family functions that drive us crazy, but we don't have to let them be the cause of a breakout! Take some extra me time and practice a little more self-care than usual this time of year. Your body, mind and skin will thank you when it's all over!
